Here you will find information about the website and explanation of difficult words.

Computer Adjustment

Laser

Due to Neurofibromatosis I've got a high paraplegia. I can't use my arms and hands. So I can't use a mouse or keyboard. Now I've got a computer adjustment that makes it possible to use a computer again. The Lucy 4. They mount a laser on your glasses.

I also have a screen with almost the same symbols as on a normal keyboard.
(See below, click to enlarge.)

Lucy-screen

When I move my head, the light is moving over the Lucy-screen. When I hold still for a moment on e.g. the 'S'. Then that letter appears on the screen. That way I can write a letter and search something for in Google. That's how I made this website.

Science

Holoroom:

It's a name made up by myself for a room where you can project patterns. To artificially make a room.

Fine dust:

Fine dust is material with a diameter of 10 micrometer and less. (0.01 mm).
It's harmful.

Magnetic field:

A magnetic field around a planet. It is likely caused by currents of magnetic minerals and elements in the core of the planet . It protects the planet from the ionizing radiation (see below) from the sun. It also makes a compass to work.

Light Year:

The distance the light travels in one year. (An Earthly year.)

Ionising Radiation:

Every atom (see below) has electrons. The radiation could cause the atom to lose an electron. You can compare it a bit with radiation. Prolonged exposure to radiation can be harmful.

Atoms, protons, neutrons and electrons:

Atom means "Indivisible" previously it was thought you were not able to split this particle.
The nucleus consists of protons (positively charged) and neutrons (uncharged). The electrons (negatively charged) orbiting the atom. In an atom the amount of protons and electrons are equal (See below). If the atom donates an electron, it becomes a positive ion. If it accepts an electron, it becomes a negative ion.

Comet:

A relatively small celestial body that often orbits elliptical around a star, consisting of dust, ice and gas. When a comet comes close along a star, it loses material which creates a very long tail. The tail always turns away from the star.

Black Hole:

One area where gravity is so great that even light can not escape. It's the most compact mass of a large celestial body. A matchbox of that material would weigh many tons on earth. It's visible because what's happening around it.

Elliptical:

Circular: It runs into a circle. An ellipse is a flattened circle. Something moves almost in elongated direction.

Absolute Zero:

It's theoretically the lowest temperature a substance can have. By this temperature the atoms stand still. It is a very complicated theory. According to quantum electronics mega this is not entirely correct. The absolute temperature is measured in Kelvin("K" degrees is kept away). 1K equals -273°C. (-459.7°F)

Kuiper Belt:

A belt around the Sun beyond the orbit of Neptune at about 40 Astronomical Units. (One Astronomical Unit equals about 150 million km or 93 million miles) It consists of comet-like objects of ice and rock. This belt has been previously suggested by the astronomer Gerard Kuiper.

Oort Cloud:

An area on a distance of 100,000 Astronomical Units from the Sun. That consists of comet-like objects. It has been previously suggested by Jan Hendrik Oort. It does not lie in a flat plane like the planets, but in a sphere around the sun.

Antibodies:

Substances (proteins) that are produced by the body to bind with a foreign substance. E.g. a bacteria, virus or other large molecule. With the aim to make it harmless.

Galaxies:

Groups of stars that are relatively close together.

Neurofibromatosis

Chromosomes:

The body consists of cells. Almost every cel has a nucleus. Inside the nucleus are the chromosomes. A Human has 23 pairs of chromosomes. Simply you can say that you have one half from your father and the other half from your mother. The chromosome-couples have numbers, they are numbered from largest to smallest. On the chromosomes are the properties that appear in the individual. On both chromosome-couples are the same properties. Which one appears in the individual, depends on which is dominant.

Dominant:

On both chromosome-couples are e.g. the property for 'eye-colour'. One is 'brown'. The other is 'blue'. Naturally brown is dominant. That person gets brown eyes.

Spontaneous mutation:

The phenomenon in which, during the fusion of the sperm and the ovum, a change takes place in the DNA structure.

Fibroma:

Fibroma as well neurofibroma. They are tumour-like objects on the body or inside the body bounded to the nerves. They are sometimes visible as nods consisting of connective tissue.

Cafe au lait spots:

It is a change of the pigment on the skin. They are large or very small in large amount. It can do no harm.

MLO:

Middelbaar Laboratorium Onderwijs. It's an education to become a lab technician.

Drain:

Due to circumstances the pressure in the brains can become dangerously high. A drain ensures that the pressure decreases.

Catheterize:

A method to remove urine from the bladder yourself.

Cyberknife:

An irradiation method which makes it possible to irradiate extreme precisely. Each time from a different angle in order to cause as little damage as possible to the healthy tissue.
More information:
Cyberknife ‐ ErasmusMC. (Dutch)

Dexamethason:

It is a synthetic hormone, similar to what is produced in the adrenal glands. It has an anti-inflammatory effect. Unfortunately it also has many side effects: Osteoporosis, hypertension, high blood sugar, moon face (fat head) thin skin and more. It is used after brain surgery.

Fokus:

Fokus is a form of housing for physically disabled people, who want to live independently. There is guidance for daily living necessities. For the rest you are independent, you have your own freedom.

Decubitus:

By prolonged sitting or lying on one place, the skin may be in a fix. Therefore there can be no blood flow through the skin and damage it. There may be a gap opened up in the worst case, and surgery may be necessary. There is then a piece of extracted healthy skin tissue, for example, from the leg and introduced into the hole. This is done by the plastic surgeon.

Tracheostoma:

It is a tube in the trachea which allows long-term respiration. a hole is made below the vocal cords, so that the air goes almost directly into the lungs. The advantage over a mask, that you can eat and talk. When you are not on the respiration, then a speak-valve allows you to speak. Otherwise the air escapes from the hole before it reaches the vocal cords.

OTG-Cable:

OTG stands for On-The-Go. This is a special USB cable that provides a connection between your device and a mouse, keyboard or USB-stick.

Relay:

An electrical component that turns as it receives an electrical pulse.
E.g.
I shortly put power on the relay. You hear a tick. Two 'iron parts' come together. In this way it's like pushing a button.

Entertainment

Nonsense text:

Nonsense text is used for the layout of e.g. a (web)page.
The text must not distract the attention of the layout.
It's just dummy text to give an impression how the page will look like.

QR‐code:

A sort of bar-code. qr stands for quick response.
To scan the code you can perform many functions.

The Cow and the Fly
I heard this story somewhere. Then I made my own twist of it.

Cloaca:

An opening in the body where both are the sex organs as well as the anus.
Both the urine and the faeces come through this same hole.
Mostly in birds, reptiles and amphibians.
